The most common one’s in NYC are the Citi Bikes, which can be seen all over Manhattan and in parts of Brooklyn as well. In fact, according to The Brooklyn Eagle, about 14 million rides were taken on Citi Bikes in 2016 alone! And while Citi Bike is enormously popular, it only extends so far into the 5 boroughs. Unless you’re in Manhattan, you probably don’t have access to a Citi Bike dock.
One way around this is the innovative dockless bike system. Various companies have come forward attempting to implement this new idea. With dockless biking, you would just have to look at an app to see where an available bike might be parked, then you could ride it anywhere and leave it wherever you needed to. The New York City Department of Transportation is currently looking in to how this could work in New York, as some unintended consequences have been seen in other cities that have tried dockless biking.
One thing we can all agree on, is that more people riding bikes means less people riding the subway and driving. And that means areas with expanded bike sharing programs could see parking congestion go down as well. And I think we’d all love to see that.
