They have launched a new app called Park NYC that tells you when your meter is about to expire and lets you add more time from your phone. All you have to do is enter the zone number found on the meter and then you can use a credit card to add more time, any time. It’s currently only available in Manhattan, but they are planning to roll it out to all five boroughs.
Of course, parking tickets for expired meters are a huge source of income for the City. The app is expected to make people more compliant with paying their meters, so it’s expected there will be less revenue from expired meter tickets in the coming years. According to the reporting of Time.com, one way they may possibly try to make up for this loss is to introduce “dynamically” priced parking spots. In other words, when things are busy, you could eventually see ‘surge’ pricing like in Uber for high traffic spots or times. Just something to be aware of for the future.
